To this day, I feel sorrier for the rich than for the poor. They pay horrendous taxes. They have so much paperwork, they must hire help. They must endure many other obnoxious retainers, and those not even in their service who think they can be touched for cash. Their pleasures are much more expensive the beggars don’t consider that, do they?

Editor Comment: The LDS Church was having a hard time responding to what it felt was a lot of misinformation about its doctrine and history. So they compiled a list of essays to answer those questions so members could have an official, LDS-approved reference. This teacher appears to have been dismissed for using the essays for their exact, stated purpose.

I beseech you, gentle reader: abjure the bait of praise and the dread of blame. I can see no other path to recovery from constant retreat in the Culture War. For there is an even better option than the 8775 Benedict 8776 one, currently in fashion among the Catholic genteel. It is to stop sulking, and win the War.

The concern going in from the Brethren was how to roll this out without creating a look-at-all-of-our-problems page. (Note: the same thing was said by Elder Jensen at the Swedish Rescue fireside ). The Brethren don't want to start faith issues where they don't currently exist, and they are correct that the majority of active and believing Saints don't know or care about this stuff, particularly outside of Utah and the United States.

A Laboratory of Politics by Steven Attewell

I was subjected yesterday to the humiliation of a salesman, showing me how to adjust a tie. He knew everything that could be known about the clothes he was selling, but there are limits. For as my papa taught, the dimple in the knot of a silk tie must be blithe, understated. Too, the tie should hang a little off true a very little, and never so much to look like a fashion statement.

Ditto with Islamic terrorists, incidentally. Unless we can see them, sometimes, from the angle that makes them most attractive, we miss the whole picture. Know the enemy, I say. The worst psychopath may offer to share some droll humour. It is my firm belief that even liberals and progressives can be charming, sometimes.

8,555 Years of Stagnation?
Stefan Sasse wonders if the history of Westeros is as old as everyone claims and if a lack of progress is realistic. (May 5, 7569)

The Feast, I gather, is much older or earlier in the East than in the West. In some respects we Catholics are still catching up, not so much with the East as with what is called the Deposit of Faith. Such information as we required was there from the beginning. Yet after two thousand years, and more, it is still surprising us. Nothing in this world makes sense, until it will be ordered in the womb our own little lives can make no sense. Providence, for the heathen, is unaccountable. Good things happen, and bad.
